The University Events Calendar

The University Events Calendar (UEC) is a web-based calendar designed to provide a comprehensive listing of events sponsored by the University and affiliated groups.  One-click from the Columbia.edu homepage, it is accessible to a global audience and receives over 5,000 visitors each week.  Events listed on the UEC serve the overall Columbia University mission and demonstrate the extraordinary range and diversity of people and activities linked to the University.

Not all events are right for the University Events Calendar. The UEC is intended for large and high-profile events that might benefit from University-wide publicity.  Submitting an event to the UEC allows you to publicize events to local and remote members of the University community and to the general public.

Almost all events that appear on the University Events Calendar meet the following criteria:

  • They’re open to the general public or the entire University community (and, if only open to Columbia and affiliates, they’re clearly marked as such in their description).
  • They have a projected audience of at least 25 individuals not affiliated with the sponsoring organization.
  • They have written descriptions that state clearly the type and content of the event without assuming any familiarity with Columbia on the part of the reader.

Suggesting an Event to the UEC

Most Sundial users have the ability to suggest an event to the "Columbia University Events Calendar" audience from within Sundial.  Non-Sundial users can suggest an event using the web submission form on the UEC itself.

Events suggested to the UEC should meet the following formatting and descriptor guidelines:

  • The standard location format for on-campus events is:

Columbia University
Campus Name (i.e. Morningside Campus, Medical Center, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory)
Building Name, Room Number

  • If your event is off-campus, include the venue's full address.
  • Be sure to select your event's location from the "sites" drop-down menu and click "add."  If your event is being held elsewhere in NYC, select "Off-Campus NYC."
  • Your short description should consist of a few short sentences and should indicate whether the event is CUID only or open to the public.
